Asian American Coalition Calls on Democrat Senator Richard Pan to Oppose Legislation Prioritizing Racial Preference

FREMONT, Calif. – Representing a diverse and broad-base Asian American coalition,Silicon Valley Chinese Association Foundation (SVCAF), San Diego Asian Americans for Equality (SDAAFE) and Asian American Coalition for Education (AACE) today called on Democrat Senator Richard Pan (SD 6) to stand with them and vote against Assembly Constitutional Amendment 5 (ACA 5) which is a divisive and controversial legislation that will discriminate against minority communities.

ACA-5 will be heard and voted on at the California State Senate Labor Public, Employment and Retirement Wednesday, June 17. If passed, it will go for a floor vote in the State.

On June 10 at the California State Assembly floor vote, members of the California Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Legislative Caucus voted against Asian American families, students, and their constituents. Senator Pan is a member of the Democrat API Legislative Caucus.

“Senator Pan has the opportunity to do the right thing and stand with his constituency. The growing voice of opposition to ACA 5 which is an ill-conceived legislation and will inflict great harm to many Californians. Senate Pan have the choice not to follow the other members of the California API Legislative Caucus, and instead, vote against ACA 5 because its true intention is blatant discrimination against minority communities,” said Crystal Lu, President of SVCAF.

ACA-5 has triggered growing resentment and opposition within the community, including Asian-American parents and families. Proponents claim that ACA-5 would offer “government preference” education, job and contract opportunities to women and minorities. Rather, the true intent of ACA 5 is to repeal Proposition 209 which prohibits the state from “discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.”
